The need for defensive driving:
Defensive driving is essential to all organizations in order to maintain maximum safety for its employees and protect company fleet. Total loss or even less severe accidents cost a lot in terms of lives and money in addition to increasing the insurance premium. In today’s competitive markets the “zero accidents” reputation means a lot. Companies that are certified or aim to be certified for the OHSAS 18001 put defensive driving training as one of their first priorities. The defensive driving seminars conducted by Settec should give the participants the basics of defensive driving and will help in reducing the number of accidents.
Why SETTEC:
SETTEC has accumulated experience in training people on defensive driving. The first seminar delivered in 2001 was based on the smith system. Over time it was tailored to suit the needs of the Arab market, mentality, and infra structure. After delivering more than 150 seminars on defensive driving to more than 2250 trainees over the past six years we have today the SETTEC System for Defensive Driving (SD2) which is a combination of international systems, requirements of the Arab markets, mentalities and infra structure, and 2000 hours of delivering defensive driving seminars to different companies and different level of trainees covering Arab and foreign, CEO’s, managers, employees, and drivers. |

SETTEC System for Defensive Driving (SD2):
The SETTEC System for Defensive Driving (SD2) covers the subject from the technical, practical, and psychological sides and is divided in the following three modules:
|
 |
| |
Module (1) – Theoretical defensive driving training:
Defensive driving being a new topic in the Arab market is always miss- perceived by the trainees. The trainees are confused what the seminar is all about and are pre set to the concept of having been driving for many years and that they do not need to learn about driving. The first half of the first day is intended to change this perception to the perception that everyone knows how to drive but there are scientific approaches that most of us don’t know. There is a foundation and there are guidelines and rules to follow. This is done by demonstrating case studies of different accidents and discussing the scientific reasons behind the accidents.
More than 90% of accidents are human errors and those could be avoided by following simple rules. By the end of the first day, the trainees are exposed to these different rules. The aim of the second day is to convert the driver from an aggressive driver to a defensive driver by enriching him with all the defensive driving rules and attitudes. This is also supplemented by the country traffic laws. The two day theoretical defensive training module is ended by a multiple choice exam in which we test how much of the delivered information was correctly conceived.
Module (2) – practical defensive driving training:
The practical defensive driving training which lasts for one day is divided in three parts with the first part on vehicle mechanics, the second part on pre inspection, and the third part being a road test for each trainee in which he drives his car or truck with one of our instructors who evaluates many points about defensive driving techniques that the trainee follows. This is done in a role play in which the instructor ask the trainee to drive to a certain destination while the instructor silently observes his pre inspection skills, and defensive driving techniques.
